& Professional Women’s Leadership Summit Convened in Washington,
D.C.
Washington, D.C., 5/18/05:
Joan C. Thompson, Executive Vice President/CFO, Minnesota Wire & Cable Co. of Saint Paul, MN recently attended the Business and Professional Women’s Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. The two-day conference provided a forum for more than 350 participants from 41 states to discuss a range of policy issues with members of the United States Congress and the Bush Administration. Thompson was nominated by Senator Norm Coleman to participate.
"It
is important that our nation’s women leaders and our federal
officials exchange ideas about the most pressing issues affecting
our families, communities, and nation. Our goal is to continue expanding
the leadership roles for women in the democratic process,"
said U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX), chairman of the Summit.
Harriet Miers, Counsel to the President of the United States, Sen.
Hutchison and several other members of Congress welcomed the delegates.
U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski (AK), Susan Collins (ME), and Olympia
Snow (ME) participated on the health care, education, and economic
panels, respectively.
Several
members of President Bush’s administration addressed the Summit’s
attendees, including Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao and Secretary
of the Interior Gale Norton. In her keynote address, U.S. Secretary
of Education Margaret Spellings updated attendees on the President’s
education programs.
Dr. Antonia Novello, former U.S. Surgeon General, discussed improving
access to affordable health care and Cheryl Mills, Associated Deputy
Administrator, Small Business Administration, spoke on job creation.
Commissioner Jo Anne Barnhart of the Social Security Administration
briefed participants on retirement security.
"The sessions allowed us to have a meaningful dialogue about growing the economy, educating our children, providing affordable health care, and strengthening retirement security," said Sen. Hutchison, the Summit’s chairman. Thompson evidences her own leadership by sitting on several boards and is civically involved in the community.
